The Elm Forest is located 24 km east of Hudson Bay on hwy 3 and
five km north on an all weather road. As you stop at the small picnic
site located here, you will hear the gurgling river down the hill
and perhaps see a variety of wildflowers such as the rare monkey
flower, and the wild morning glory. The true magnificence of this
forest envelopes you. The massive elms, over a century old, tower
70 feet overhead and you are surrounded and dwarfed by a dense understory
of ostrich ferns, that grow over 6 feet in height. Quiet, cool and
mysterious, the Elm Forest has a gentle, majestic atmosphere. High
in the canopy overhead twitter the red eyed vireo, redstarts and
orioles. Sightings of rare or the not so rare flowers enhance your
hike. You might even catch sight of a flying squirrel or an elk.
Then suddenly, you emerge back into the sunshine! It is a complete
surprise to many, that Hudson Bay is second only to Cypress Hills
for rare and exotic Saskatchewan plants.
